This cache is an introduction to the wonderful resource that
is
Penn State's Arboretum. It lies on the outskirts of just one
entrance to this beautiful natural area. Cache is rather large
and
contains several items and a notebook, but you may wish to bring
a
pen/pencil.
Parking is available at Sunset Park. The bike path extending from
McKee Street serves as a trailhead and a major access point to the
Arboretum.
According to Penn State, the Arboretum is dedicated “To
preserving the beauty and ecological functions of vegetated
landscapes in an urbanizing society.” It's a wonderful area -
but they do very little to market it! Most students think of "The
Arboretum" as simply the new building off of Park Avenue, but it is
so much more. I have spent many hours wandering on the Bellefonte
Central Rail Trail, wandered about in the adjacent woods many
times, and watched legions of crows and a bevy of other birds all
around. It's one of the most accessible, diverse, and FUN areas in
State College - and it goes completely unnoticed! This is one of
the only caches in the arboretum that I am aware of, but it is only
one of many to come. (And hopefully, not just by me.)
Enjoy - and bring your binoculars!
Important - the cache should be visible from many angles, but
please do not endanger yourself by attempting to reach it by
crossing terrain in a dangerous way. There are two different
approaches. Most seem to be taking the "sporting" route, so be
careful and watch for loose soil if the weather is warm! It is,
however, perfectly accessible by walking on level ground, with a
little bit of nonchalance...
