Geocache Description:

Cache is located on state game lands, legal parking at any trailhead.

This cache will take you back in time to about 1900 or so when the Wilkes-Barre & Hazleton Railroad constructed a line to carry passengers from downtown Wilkes-Barre up over Penobscot Mountain, through a tunnel in what is now known as Rice Township. This was an electric train which the locals affectionately named The Cannonball, though it was one of ten train cars used over its 33 year life actually named "Wilkes-Barre", "Hazleton","Luzerne", "Kis-Lyn", "Wyoming","Nuangola",Westmoreland","Nescopeck", "Lehigh" and "Anthracite". The line was shut down in 1933 and the tracks removed in the 1940's. The purpose of this cache is to bring to light this forgotten relic and to instill in you some semblence of what it must have been like to travel up to the mountain hearing nothing but the clicking wheels on the tracks and the quiet hum of the electric motors. The remains of Nuangola station can still be seen in front of Rice Twp. fire hall. Good luck.
