This cache is the first of several caches
placed to introduce folks to some of the great bike trails in the
Fairbanks area. Like in most other parts of the country, the
term "bike trail" is somewhat of a misnomer because the trails
around Fairbanks are actually nonmotorized multi-use trails.
In the summer, they are frequented by bicyclists, runners, baby
joggers, dog walkers, rollerbladers and roller skiers. In the
winter, the trails are used by bicyclists (even down to -40° F/C),
runners, walkers, skiers, and skijorers because they are packed so nicely by
snowmobile traffic. Due to Fairbanks' long cold winters, many
sections of the bike trails have been frost heaved, making a
mountain or hybrid bicycle the most practical means of two-wheeled
transportation.
The cache is placed in the vicinity of an
unfinished portion of the trail system that left a bridge to
nowhere across one of Fairbanks' expressways. The original
concept for the bridge was to tie the northern portion of the trail
system into the heart of Fairbanks. The cache is accessible
from the trail year-round and there are several access points for
the trail both to the east and the west. You are encouraged
to travel more of the trail than you will see while visiting the
cache. If you do, you will be rewarded with views of Noyes Slough,
ponds with wildlife, Dog
Mushers' Hall, Ballaine Lake, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and last, but
certainly not least, Hot Licks Ice Cream, a favorite place to end a
bike ride on a warm summer day.
Be sure to record the mystery cache
code word from the title block of the cache log sheet . You
will need the code word to find an upcoming bonus mystery
cache.
Think small if bringing trade
