This cache was part of a series known as the 2012 Clackamas County Historical Society (CCHS) GEO-Heritage Tour.

"The iron industry in Oregon was in every way analogous to the early growth and development of the state. Interest in finding deposits of iron ore was shown as early as 1841. By 1844 large amounts of ore had been discovered near Oswego, Oregon, seven miles from Portland.... The mining and smelting of iron locally was closely linked to the predominant role of iron in Portland architecture.

Even though the city's first iron fronts were imported from San Francisco, the majority of fronts after 1867 were made locally with ore produced by the Oregon Iron Company and its successors the Oswego Iron Company and the Oregon Iron and Steel Company.

Local production of iron was promoted by some of the most prominent men in the Portland community--perhaps in the hope of making Portland one of the great iron-producing centers of the country." (William J. Hawkins III, The Grand Era of Cast-Iron Architecture in Portland, pp. 188, 190)

If you enjoyed the history found here, check out the Oswego Iron Heritage Trail for pathways to seven sites associated with Oregon’s pioneer iron industry. (visit link)

The Trail offers a different way of looking at the landscape, through the eyes of those who mined its ore, cut its timber, and harnessed its waterpower for the purpose of melting iron at the only surviving historic furnace west of the Rocky Mountains.

If you have time and haven't already seen the actual Iron Furnace site, visit nearby George Rogers Park N45 24.655 W122 39.640.

HOW TO DETERMINE THE FINAL COORDINATES

-------------------------------------------------------------
Gather this information from the posted starting coordinates:

The number of words in the quote by Chief Seattle = AB

The number of signs/markers at the big tree = C

The number of large boulders with history plaques on them (that are within 20 feet of the peg tree) = D

At the second location N45 24.821 W122 39.744 find this:
The 3 digit number over the main entrance doorway = EFG

The year this building was sold by the organization that had it built = HIJK

At the third location N45 24.762 W122 39.667 find this:

How many 4 digit years are on this sign (be sure to check the small print too) = L (for example, if the sign had the years 1776 and 1999 on it, the answer here would be ‘2’).

How many letters in the last word on this sign = M

Use the information you’ve gathered to fill in the missing numbers on these final coordinates.

N 45 24. [A+B+E][J][C-D] W 122 39.[F-H][G-K][L-M]

Check: The sum of all the letters (A through M) = 54

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

IF THE BRACKETS IN THE INSTRUCTIONS CONFUSE YOU: Don't let the brackets [] make you think you have to do multiplication to find the coordinates. The contents of each bracket become a digit in the coordinates. For example, if the clues told you X=1 Y=1 and Z=7 and you see N 45 30.99[X+Y+Z] then [X+Y+Z] is [1+1+7] so the coordinates would be N 45 30.999.

This cache was one of 10 Geocaches, 2 Earthcaches, 7 Passport Stamps and 11 Info sites in the 2012 Clackamas County Historical Society (CCHS) GEO-Heritage Tour.
