THE LONDON WALL
This is a Wherigo cache that will take you
for a walk along the course of the Roman Wall.
You will need to get the Wherigo cartridge
from
here and load it into your Wherigo enabled device. It has
been designed to run on the lowest level of device, a Garmin, and
should work equally well on other devices. When logging your find
please note what device you were using and whether you experienced
any problems. If you are not sure what a Wherigo is then have a
look here.
The walk starts at the Tower of London and
ends near Blackfriars and covers a distance of about 5km (3 miles)
and should take between one and two hours to complete. You may get
distracted along the route as there is plenty to see and there are
other Geocaches close to the route that you may choose to do. A
London street map may come in useful but, to assist with your
journey, a card will be added to the cartridge inventory giving
instructions on how to get to the next zone. Some shortcuts may be
available but they are not always available throughout 24
hours.
To give you an idea of where your journey
will take you. On the map, below, you will start in the bottom
right corner, head north via Aldgate and the Museum of London and
then head south towards Blackfriars.
Needless to say, not much of the wall
remains but there are places where some of the original structure
can still be seen. The walk takes in the Museum of London where you
can rest a while or do some browsing into London's history. Along
the walk there is a series of "tiles". These are numbered and
increase, as you walk away from the Tower of London, from 1 to 21.
Sadly, many "tiles" have gone missing but I did find the following
during the creation of the Wherigo:
1. "The London Wall Walk" tile at the Tower
of London
2. Tile No 2 at Tower Hill
3. Tile No 3 in Coopers Row - note this is a brass plate
4. Tile No 5 in Aldgate
5. Tile No 7 in Bevis Marks
6. Tile No 11 in Moorgate
7. Tile No 13 at St Alphage Garden
8. Tile No 14 at St Giles Church
9. Tile No 15 at the Barber Surgeons Hall Garden
10. Tile No 18 near the Barber Surgeons Hall Garden
If you find any other "tiles" please let me know. I think, for
example, there may be one in the currently blocked off Subway near
Dukes Place (No 6) and possibly another near St Alphage Garden (No
12).
The cache container is similar in size to a
35mm film container and is attached magnetically in its resting
place. A spoiler picture and other clues, as to its location, are
included in the Wherigo cartridge and will be made available once
you have done the walk.
In general, the cartridge just involves
walking from zone to zone but, to see if you are paying attention,
the odd question may be thrown in that will require a correct
answer before you can progress. There are five questions in
all.
If you wish to "kill two birds with one
stone" you may wish to do virtual cache GCHZBV (Roamin' the Roman
Wall in London) at the same time.
