Geocache Description:

This cache is located in Garin/Dry Creek Regional Park. The cache is located about 1070 feet above sea level and about 900 feet above the parking area.

On August 23, 1951 United Air Lines Flight 615, a Douglas DC-6B, left Boston for San Francisco with three stops in between. Flight 615 left Chicago with 44 passengers, including two infants, and six crew members. At 4:25 a.m. August 24 United 615 crashed about 87 feet below Tolman Peak just East of Union City. The DC-6 impacted the hill just below the peak and cartwheeled over and scattered itself across the small saddle just beyond. Pieces of the aircraft can still be found in the area if you know where to look. Also, there is a display at the Union City Historical Museum about the crash. 3841 Smith St. 324-3298 The cause of the accident was navigational error and lack of functioning radar equipment at Oakland Airport. This cache site is dedicated to the fifty people who lost their lives here over fifty years ago. While sitting here enjoying the view and a snack, also think about how far aviation has advanced in the last 50 years. The cache, 10x10 tupperware, contains many items related to aircraft and aviation.
Note: Near the top where the trail splits and one looks like a shortcut, that trail turns into a very narrow pig trail thru thick brush. It is not recommended!!!
It is a 2.3 mile walk from the end of May Rd.
