Geocache Description:

This another in a series of caches placed at film locations for the 1984 movie Country, starring Jessica Lange and Sam Shepard.

Permission to place the cache has been given by the owners, Ernie and Virginia Sage. Parking is available in the field drive on the south side of the road. Be careful backing out on the highway as the road can be very busy. If you happen to stop during the summer months, the Sage's may have some sweet corn to sell. Availability during the winter is highly dependent on the amount of snow!

The cache is a camo-covered container that originally held an FTF pin for the first to find, a couple of carabiner key chains, a red car, some other small trinkets, and Darla the Mythical, Morphing Creature, a brand new travel bug just starting her journey.

The filming of Country, the movie

As Gil (Sam Shepard) sinks deeper into depression and drink, his wife Jewell (Jessica Lange) decides she won't go down without a fight. She starts by making a visit to the local farm cooperative to find the names of other farmers who are being squeezed by the FmHA. Armed with her list, her telephone, and her strong will, she starts calling the neighbors who find themselves in a similar situation and rallies their support. Some are hesitant, but others begin to see there may be some hope. Jewell continues to rally the farmers, making door to door visits and stopping to chat wherever she runs into her neighbors. With enough determined farmers present at the Ivy auction, Jewell feels they can take a stand.

To film the scenes where Jewell is traveling from farm to farm seeking support at the auction, the director, Dick Pearce, wanted a single location with a lot of buildings where they could give the appearance that Jewell was traveling between farms but the crew wouldn't have to move and set up equipment. My husband, Rob, who was an extra in the auction scene, overheard the film crew discussing their need of a place close by that had lots of livestock and many buildings. Rob suggested Ernie and Virginia Sage's, the location for this cache. Rob drove the editor over in his truck to check out the location and he liked what he saw. The film crew moved all the equipment over to Sage's, paid Sage's $500 for the afternoon, and used six scenes in the final version of the movie, all shot at the Sage farm. One scene even includes Virginia greeting Jessica Lange at her back door.
