This cache is tucked nicely into a little corner of DC. One of the
best parts about the spot (check the logs) is that people often run
into wildlife here: foxes and especially deer - right in the middle
of DC. It's still impossible to find unobtrusive non-NPS land in
the district, but this is about as close as you can get. It's a
very nice and quiet area – right near a little tributary of Rock
Creek and a small spur of the park. Rock Creek Park is a great park
in the middle of DC – it feels like you’re backstage of the city.
It’s also much bigger than you would think. I encourage you to hike
around it if you want (you can go for miles). Here’s
a map of it.
Also, people have asked me what the name of the cache refers to.
Basically, it's dedicated to the fact that DC is the only US
territory that pays federal taxes, and yet has no say in how those
taxes are spent. We have a greater population (over half a mill)
than Wyoming, and yet we have no voice in the legislature, no
representatives or senators in congress. Taxation without
representation - didn't we fight a war with the Brits over that
awhile back? Anyway, I put some "No Taxation Without
Representation" buttons in the cache. Feel free to take one and
spread the word. (If I the cache runs out, please let me know.) If
you want to learn more, you can go to DC Vote.
If you want extra points, you can visit one of my favorite
monuments in DC of one of my favorite poets. It's right nearby at N
38° 55.229', W 077° 03.678'.
A last word of advice: you may need the hint to find this cache,
as the heavy tree cover could make the reading slightly off. The
hint will also help with approaching the cache stealthily, so
consider reading it if you're worried about that (there are a few
houses nearby to the east of the cache). Good luck!
