The COORDINATES for this cache indicate the PARKING area for the Messalonskee Trail in Oakland. This is a series of 7 caches. Partial Coordinates can be found in caches 1-6. You must find all 6 to get the coordinates for "Early Fences".
Note that the coordinates above indicate the PARKING for the beginning of the Messalonskee Trail.
You should have, by now, collected the 6 coordinates needed for Cache #7 of the Messalonskee Trail Series, "Early Fences".
Once this cache is located, you can return along the way you came, back to the Oakland end. If you return from "Early Fences" To Oakland, the round trip will be approx. 3 1/2 miles. OR YOU MAY CONTINUE TO THE RICE RIPS RD. end of the Trail (if you were lucky to have a geo-cache partner with a second vehicle to park here) The walking distance from Oakland to Rice Rips Rd. is 3 miles. Rice Rips Rd. Parking Coordinates are: N 44 34.040 & W 069 41.068.
EDITED 4-20-09: I have added 3 new caches to this series which should provide additional fun along your trek.
The Rice Rips end of the trail will reward you with spectacular views of the wood and cresote penstock which carries water to the treatment plant in Waterville. In winter, there are interesting ice formations on the penstock created from little spurts of leaking water out of the wooden penstock, and in summer, some neat fountains. You might want snowshoes for this part of the trail in winter.
