Wordbunnies Series #1 - In Terms Of Jargon Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

prastost: Thanks for the run - too bad the area is under construction. Wordbunnies #1 is now officially archived. Although it is sad to see another one in the series go, I have directed my energy to making new mystery caches/puzzles that have now all been released.

Geocache Description:

CACHE IS NOT AT THE POSTED COORDINATES!

This is the 1st cache in the wordbunnies series - read below to find out more about wordbunnies and most importantly, the cache puzzle. If locating the cache during the summer, please pay attention to the poison ivy caution signs, but this should not be a problem if attempting during the winter. This is a sign only cache, but can fit very small geocoins.

Congratulations to Lisdowney and Tequila for FTF!

FYI: Construction in park taking place as of April 2009: see photo gallery and note posted on April 29th for more details. New logging requirements: only because cache temporarily disabled for prolonged period, to log find, please send owner coordinates by May 2nd before cache is archived.

Some geocachers tossed up a great idea when talking around the water cooler - to create an ongoing series of mystery caches to commemorate the start of my geocaching premium membership. I thought, why not … and this is where the wordbunnies series begins.

Lets get everyone up to speed on wordbunnies - a "wordbunny" is a clump of words scattered about the surface of text that do little more than simply hold together as a clump of words. Wordbunnies jump right out of our mouths and into our speech and writing. Often mistaken as verbiage, these cute little wordbunnies don't add anything to the text; unlike dust bunnies, there's nothing technically wrong with them.

This is the 1st cache in the wordbunnies series - a mystery cache series across the GTA aimed to highlight redundancy of phrases or words that have become commonplace.

Like many, I am a victim of wordbunnies: my tireless effort to free myself of wordbunny jargon is an onerous task. But do not fret, I have met the magical ink monkey who professes that he can protect our "word safety".

Sometimes discrete, sometimes obvious, these pesky little creatures have a way of showing up in even the most meticulous text owner's text, and often times right before company.

(Special thanks to The Word Mechanic for enlightening me with a list of wordbunnies that hop right out and slap many with their delicate little furry white paws.)

Solve this cache puzzle and you will be one step closer to fine-tuning your vocabulary!

Wordbunny #1:
"In terms of" is a phrase easily picked up once exposed, as it is believed to be highly academic. Although “in terms of” is not as prevalent in mainstream media publications, this wordbunny is starting to roll off the tongues of many intellectuals at the beginning of every sentence.

Cache Puzzle:

Have you ever played the number game with coordinates? Let’s try!

All laws of basic arithmetic apply, including order of operations.

If you take the DD, MM, and MMM (decimal minutes) of a coordinate (in the same format as the posted coordinates - WGS84 Datum - N DD° MM.MMM, W DDD° MM.MMM), you have three separate numbers that can be summarized in an equation.

N 43° 47.142’ … is … 43 + 47 = 142

BUT WAIT! That equation makes absolutely no sense mathematically! How can it be ‘fixed’ so it abides by the laws of mathematics and still retains its location information?

Here’s a better equation to represent N 43° 47.142’ … 12 - 3 = 9. But how?

N (4 x 3)° (4-7) . (1+4x2) ’ … Get it?

Now it’s your turn to take the number game challenge!

Here are your equations:

Latitude: 7 - 4 = 3
Longitude: -2 - 2 = -4

Good luck!
