Geocache Description:

This cache is located on city property in the South Hills near a little known historic structure.

Park at N46 34.254, W111 59.717. Walk up the road past the red house and enter the trail that follows the power lines.

The Smithers’ Lime Kiln was built by Samuel Smithers in 1890. Smithers first came to Helena from Wisconsin in 1889 and opened a shoe store where the public library now stands. The lime produced from this kiln was used in constructing the homes in the Lennox subdivision in the southeastern section of the city. The kiln ceased operation in 1893 as a result of the 1893 depression. Samuel Smithers died Thanksgiving morning in 1933. He was 71 years old.

This cache is a Tupperware container with a logbook, pencil, pencil sharpener, and several small trade items.

We hope you enjoy this gem from Helena’s rich historic past.
