Helvetinkolu is a gorge formed in the smaller cleft which cuts
across the main rift valley. Helvetinkolu can be reached by road
from Ruovesi to Virrat, signposted from Pohtio village. It is about
8 km from the Ruovesi-Virrat road to the parking place, which is
the starting point for a 2 km hiking trail to Helvetinkolu.
Helvetinjärvi National Park is representative of the variable,
wild forest ecosystems of the northern part of Häme. Since the
19th century it is a famous sight located in the northern part of
the national park to the south east of Lake Iso Helvetinjärvi.
The deep gorges are reminders of shifts in the earth´s crust,
formed 200 millions years ago.
Special features of the area include deep gorges steeply sided
lakes, small forest pools and remote forests. The rugged scenery in
the park is formed by faults in the bedrock running right through
the area. Lakes like Kovero, Luomajärvi and Iso, Pikku and
Pitkä Helvetinjärvi, have formed in the deepest faults.
Among the smaller clefts crossing the main valleys the most reowned
is Helvetinkolu, at the southeastern end of the Lake
Helvetinjärvi. This has been attracting visitors since the
1800's. Apart from the picturesque lakes with their steep sides,
numerous pools fringed with old growth forests make a visit well
worthwhile. The park's forests are typically very varied, with
Scots pine forests carpeted by lichen on rocky outcrops, tall
spruce forests on fertile moraine deposits and at the foot of crags
and slopes, and along the streams eve herb-rich stands. Most of the
peatlands are small eutrophicated peat forests and Scots pine bogs.
The Helvetinjärvi area has long been used by hikers. The hut
at Helvetinkolu was built as long ago as the 1920's. Even today,
Helvetinkolu and Haukan hieta are the most commonly visited spots
in the park. The latter is the most popular place for swimming and
camping. As a whole the park is highly suitable for rambling and
camping.
