Collect all the Pennsylvania Legacy of Conservation cards – one from each of the 30 caches in the trail – and show them all at one of the validation centers to receive a Legacy of Conservation geocoin (non-trackable). This geotrail will be archived on June 30, 2013.
Elk in Pennsylvania? Yep. Way back when, there were native eastern elk in the state, but they were hunted to extinction. The elk here now were re-introduced beginning in 1913, not far from this spot. Pennsylvania now has hundreds of elk, and the town of Benezette is ground zero for the herd. The Elk Country Visitor Center (ECVC) is a brand new visitor center that highlights the elk, the conservation efforts that brought them here, and other local wildlife. A visit to the Elk Country Visitor Center theater is a must-see – indoor snow, rain, scent cannons, interesting stuff. Be advised that there are wild elk in the immediate area – don’t do anything stupid like trying to pet them. Okay, on to the cache: Go to the coordinates and look up. The m.mmm for N&W should come into focus (on the conduit - no need to stand on the benches). Use there new numbers (m.mmm) with the degree minute coordinates to guide you to the final cache. Stay on the limestone trail to the viewing blind and watch for muggles. Center Hours: Jan-March: Saturdays & Sundays 9 to 5, April-May: Thursday – Monday 9 to 5, June-October: 7 days a week 8 to 8, Nov-December: Thursday – Monday 9 to 5
