The earliest settlement in what is now Buena Vista Township was along a pristine stream known as Deep Run. The area is now called Pancoast Mill.

Sometime in the last part of the 1700's a man named Champion (ArchibaldSr.?) Campbell squatted on the land. The land was thick with forests and swamps. Champion proceeded to dam Deep Run to form the mill pond and built a saw mill next to the dam.

The largest trees were sawn into lumber while the smaller ones were used for charcoal and tar. The mill had customers as far away as Philadelphia. The goods were hauled by mule teams to the city.

For over 100 years the mill remained in operation. Sometime in 1913 a storm washed away it's foundation. The mill was never rebuilt.
