This is a popular hike in the mountains between Bakersfield and Los Angeles. The peak is 8,800 feet. Nice view!
Although this cache is a container on the peak of Sawmill Mountian, it was not placed by myself and is not associated with the sport of geocaching. Therefore, I will consider it a "Virtual Cache".
To get to this wonderful hiking spot, take Interstate 5 north of Los Angeles. You will come to the Frazier Park offramp about 2 miles north of Gorman. (About 30 to 40 miles south of Bakersfield if you are driving from the north.) Drive west on the road that goes into Frazier Park, go past Frazier Park, veer right at the first "Y". Drive a few miles, and you will come to a "T" intersection. Stay on the main road, (DON'T head towards Pine Mountain Club). The parking area is 9 miles from this point. (Anyone who lives in the area will know the directions to "The Parking Lot at Mount Pinos", so don't hesitate to ask if you need help.)
The parking area is great. About the size of a football field. You'll find the trailhead to Mt. Pinos, and take that. A mile and a half and 600 foot elevation gain will take you to the top of Mt. Pinos. But you have to go to the next mountain over! You'll see a trail heading west from Mt. Pinos peak. Take it! There is a 450 foot drop to the "saddle" between the mountains, and then another 450 foot gain up Sawmill Mountain. Sawmill Mountain is a bit more "lush" of a forest. You'll be hiking on pine needles in many areas. Your GPS will take you to the cache.
Notes on the Virtual Cache:
It is a can with notepads in it left for people to sign in. Once again, it was NOT left by me. Please sign the log. But don't take anything from the can. I am sure other hikers will appreciate a fresh pencil if you have one to leave!
Good luck, and enjoy the hike!

Re-visited the cache. It's alive and well! Someone had re-arranged the rock pile that the cache is in, and it's looking nice. Great hike. A bit hot!

Robb_Dogg and myself did Pinos, Sawmill and the actual summit of Grouse Mountain, (Above the cache). Very hazy today so the views weren't the best. Signed, and added a logbook to the Sierra Club Summit Can, and off we went.
Thanks...

I camped out on Mt. Pinos to acclimate myself for this hike, and the weather could not have been nicer! I signed the summit log.

A beautiful Friday the 13th and a great place to have lunch and enjoy the views before going on to the next cache. Thanks.
