Geocache Description:

POSTED COORDINATES NOT CACHE LOCATION. They take you to Stage 1. You will find numbers at each stage to fill in coordinates to the next stage as you tour historic Lexington.

DON'T DO AT NIGHT. It isn't appropriate to be at some sites after dark. It should take about a half hour to complete this cache, depending on how fast you walk in the last stages.

If you see litter along Memory Lane grab one of the CITO kits at final cache and CITO your way out to thank the town for allowing this cache.

The posted coordinates take you to the original Lexington Train Depot. Moved from the railroad in the 1980s, it's an interesting antique and gift shop. You don’t have to go inside but I did and I found, among other things, an interesting free brochure telling of when President Theodore Roosevelt spoke in Lexington.

Stage 2

A = number of ALL of the windows on front of the depot minus 10
B = number of windows on the front of the depot minus 5
C = number of doors on the front of the depot doubled

Stage 3: The last numbers should take you to within sight of a mural depicting some Lexington history.

A= Sum of first and last number of the year the mural was done.
B = Double the number of fence posts in the fence on the mural
C = The number of letters in the name of the barbershop plus the last number in the year the painting was signed.

Stage 4: This takes you to a memorial to all of the soldiers buried in McLean County who were involved in the War of 1812.

A =The second number in the number of soldiers from the War of 1812 buried in McLean County.
B = The last number of the second year listed on the large stone at this site (Hint: The first number is "1861)

Stage 5: The previous cords take you to a park north of Lexington with a sign that says, in part, “66 Roadside Attraction."

”Memory Lane" here is the Lexington alignment of Route 66.
DO NOT DRIVE DOWN the Memory Lane area in a motor vehicle unless the gates are open. That is only a couple of days a year. You will most likely need to walk or bicycle. The walk down and back is almost a mile.

What year was this segment of Route 66 going into Lexington dedicated? You should be able to see a full-sized billboard about Route 66 to the right of the Roadside Attraction sign and about 50-75 yards away. How many cars are on the sign?
A =Number of cars on the sign multiplied by 3

B=Number of cars multiplied by 4
C = Last number of the year this section of road was dedicated
D =First number of the year this area of Route 66 was dedicated.

Stage 6: These coordinates take you to where you can see the Oasis sign. What years was the Oasis open?

A = Third number in the year the Oasis closed
B = Third number in the year the Oasis opened
C =Second number in the year the Oasis closed
D = Last number in the year the Oasis closed minus the first number in the year it closed

Stage 7: This should take you to a Memory Lane sign of a motel. What year was this motel established?

A = Second number of the year the motel was established
B = Third number of the year it was established
C = The sum of the first number and the third number of the year it was established.

Stage 8 or Final: The above coordinates brought you to where you can look down the old Mother Road at a series of BurmaShave signs. Some of us remember these and others have maybe read about. Stroll on down the old Mother Road a little ways and notice a few details about the signs.

A = Number of words in all the BurmaShave signs put together divided by two (last sign is counted as two words.)
B = Total number of signs plus two
C = number of signs

These cords take you to the final cache. It has some items in it related to road travel or the Mother Road. Please bring something to leave that has to do with the Mother Road or road travel. TBs and geocoins are appropriate as the Mother Road was about traveling. Please, carefully conceal it in its hiding place.

If you search for benchmarks, there are 5 listed within a mile.

Thanks go to Lexington Mayor John Mohr for welcoming this cache and offering any help he and the City of Lexington can be to make it possible. Any mistakes made in the history of this great little town on the old Mother Road with this cache are mine and not his.

On the day I placed this, I saw a fox guarding the spot where it is. Say "Hi" to it when you're there.

Get Your Kicks On Route 66
Enjoy your drive down the Mother Road.

The intent of this series is to point out historic or unique places along old route 66 between IL and CA. It is NOT meant to be a power trail as caches may be 50 miles or more apart. Stop and enjoy these sights along the way.
