Geocache Description:

Located at the main Castlefield Basin where the white bridge sweeps across. East terrain, should be a quick find.

This is the first of a series of caches that will be placed with the intention of highlighting the industrial (and Roman) heritage of Castlefield.

This cache is placed at the site where the Duke of Bridgewater’s Canal (Bridgewater Canal) ultimately terminates. The Bridgewater canal, proposed by Francis Egerton, and begun in 1760 following the passing of the Bridgewater was the first navigable manmade waterway to be built in the Britain, with the intention of transporting coal from the Duke’s mines in Worsley to the centre of Manchester. Opened in 1761, by 1765, it extended into Caslefield. This engineering triumph was made possible by the master engineer James Brindley. More on this canal will be given in other cache descriptions intended for this area.

This Cache is located where the Bridgewater Canal enters the various Wharfs of Castlefield. It is a magnetic micro containing a logbook and a pencil. Once found, you can sit down and admire the many industrial features of the area, including canals, wharfs, basins, viaducts and warehouses, all of which have been renovated without compromising their historical value. The Museum of Science and Industry is located nearby; a free museum well worth a visit. There is ample car parking, bus and rail links to the area. The area has a high muggle factor, especially at weekends when the weather is fine, so please take care.
