The Skelton transmitting station is a radio transmitter site
located near Skelton, Cumbria, England approximately 5 miles north
west of Penrith.
Its main purpose is shortwave broadcasting, the aerial being a
365m high guyed steel lattice mast, which is currently the tallest
structure in the UK. Previously the tallest structure was the
Belmont TV mast near Donington on Bain, Lincolnshire which was once
387m tall. However, on 5 October 2009 its height was reduced by
about 35m as part of the switchover to digital broadcasting. Now
standing at 351m tall the Belmont mast is the second tallest
structure just beating the new Caldbeck mast, which is 337m tall,
into third place.
To put this in perspective One Canada Square, Canary Wharf,
London (the tallest inhabited building in the UK) is a mere 235m
high and the BT Tower is only 188m high.
