Geocache Description:

Ghost Rails is an on-going series of caches dedicated to a time gone by, a time when the railroads were a major part of the lives of the people and communities of this great country. In many places, the railroads have disappeared. No longer needed, the tracks were removed, and the remnants neglected and forgotten. Ghost Rails will attempt to show you some of these places for a short history lesson and your caching enjoyment.

Originally built by the North Yakima and Valley Railroad to serve the fruit industry of the Cowiche-Tieton area, this line was abandoned by Burlington Northern. Many sections of this line have disappeared. Fortunately, a three mile section of roadbed from Weikel Road down thru Cowiche Canyon has been saved by the Cowiche Canyon Conservancy as a hiking and biking trail.

The sounds you now hear in this area are the rushing of water, the calls of wildlife, and the merry laughter of families enjoying an outing. But if you are silent and listen carefully, you can hear the faint sounds of wheels clicking on rails and the lonesome wail of a whistle echoing in the canyon.
