Geocache Description:

At the site of a power line built in 1908 up a quiet side canyon.

At the site of the Eastern Mining Area Transmission Line, built in 1908, and then upgraded in 1911 when Roosevelt dam was completed. You can see the pylons for the tower base. The materials were hauled in by mule. 600 tons of steel, 500 barrels of concrete and 12 tons of anchor bolts were used. This line ran from Mesa to Roosevelt to Miami/Globe and then on to Superior. You can still see sections of it in use after nearly 100 years (with the 1911 insulator upgrade) along the Apache Trail and the highway to Globe. The steel towers were made by a windmill tower company. This section was bypassed sometime in the past, and the towers were reused (along with others) to build the Roosevelt to Miami line. A 4WD vehicle is recommended for the last 1/4 mile. The drive is up a wash, so be aware of flooding possibilities during/after a rain. The last part of the hike to the cache is up the side of a hill a bit. Wear boots.
