Geocache Description:

Cache Information
Quick easy cache. Rocky dirt track. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE TO THE CACHE.
This is a popular route with horse riders, runners and dog walkers.

The Beeches
This old road was once the main access route to New Lanark. The road is now not suitable for traffic although some local councillors are keen to recondition the road to improve traffic circulation. It is known as "The Beeches" due to the large beech trees that line the route. Some of the trees are said to be over 200 years old. This is one of the routes used in the Riding of the Marches during Lanark Lanimers.

When the houses were being built next to the road an archaeological dig was commissioned. The dig yielded late medieval pottery sherds and a cut halfpenny of Henry I of England, minted between 1247 and 1272. A linear silt and stone-filled ditch demonstrated the existence of a historical field system, probably dating to the late medieval/early post-medieval period.

During the development of the local houses the plan was to uproot the trees and plant new ones. I am glad to say that many of the original trees still exist.

Congratulations to 6669 for being the FTF.
