Geocache Description:

The cache is a small black plastic tool box hidden inside one of the Dulzura Conduit's more accessible tunnels.

Around the turn of the last century the 11-mile long Dulzura Conduit was constructed of concrete channels, wooden flumes, steel pipes and tunnels to link the Cottonwood Creek/Pine Creek watersheds with Lower Otay Lake. The last registered flow through the conduit was 08/15/2001.

Due to its remote location the area is also a herpetologists delight and numerous web sites list sightings of elusive reptile species in the area of the conduit. Having said that, not-so-rare species, i.e. rattlesnakes are also in the area so please be careful and keep a watchful eye out. I have seen rosy boas and horned lizards along the conduit.

There are no gates or fences to cross to get to the cache. The easiest way to access the location without a long hike (which I have done before and its still good) is to park at N 32.37.530, W 116.42.104, which is within a few yards of the conduit channel and just over a quarter of a mile from the tunnel entrance.

The cache itself is approximately 1000’ N/E of the given coordinates. It really is subterranean so if you are claustrophobic you may want to pass this one by. You could see bats hanging from the ceiling of the tunnel and frogs on the floor. In some places, tiny stalactites have started reaching for the concrete channel below. Some have grown to nearly two inches in the century since the conduit tunnel was blasted out of the granite hillside.

The reason this has a “3” in terrain is because in order to access the cache you have to be able to climb down into a 4’ concrete channel and out again. Bring a good flashlight and have fun.

In addition to a pen and a log, the original cache contents include:

Mini-flashlight
Glow-in-the-dark chalk
Vampire lip-gloss
Vampire teeth
A white Hummer SUV (matchbox type)
A snake and a whole bunch of spiders, one big one and a lot of little ones
