Hill on outskirts of South Range, MI. Altitude: 1500ft. Hill is very steep.
"Brain Hill" is actually Whealkate Bluff (from certain angles, it looks like a giant brain plunked down on the landscape). The cache is a 1.5 ft piece of PVC pipe (4 in. diameter) with a rubber test plug on one end (loosen the wing nut to open it, you might also need to pry it a little with a flat-bladed screwdriver). It is hidden so that you won't see it until you are right next to it. The cache contains some trinkets and a log book. You can get to the general vicinity by going to South Range on M-26, turning west onto fourth street, then turning right and driving down Wealkate Road until the pavement ends. Additional details are in the spoiler.

This one should be called Heart Attack Hill. I didn't use the back way in so climed the face of the hill. My wife waited at the bottom poised to dial 911 in the event that I stroked out on my way up. I made it. I found it. Enjoyed the great vistas from the top. I didn't take anything or leave anything and signed the log. Thanks for a neat hide and an excuse to exercise this 67 year old body.

Found it! Cloudy and rainy, so I couldn't enjoy the view, guess I'll have to come back some other day, but it was still fun driving to the top. No, I didn't even try the obvious way, I used online maps and satellite imagery to find the back way, which was still difficult, but possible. At the top, I found three other trials, so I took them each in turn, and no, none of them were easy (but all of them were fun). TNLN TFTC

Day 8 of our U.P. caching/backpacking/camping/4-wheeling/kayaking trip. After backpacking for 5 and 1/2 days in the Porkies we finally made it back to the Jeep and drove towards Houghton. The one cache I had on my mind was the South Range Kame earthcache. We parked my Jeep at the bottom and climbed up the backside. I should have just driven my rig to the top...but the hike wasn't too long. Once at the top we hiked down the 2-track and at the tee I spotted a ziploc bag on the ground. It contained a single piece of paper...the travel bug information sheet for the Oldest Active Michigan Caches" travel bug. Hmmm. I remembered that the Brain Hill cache was nearby. After getting the information for the South Range Kame earthcache we came back to the area and I started looking where I remembered finding the Brain Hill Cache on August 9th of 2005 (didn't have coordinates for it). Bingo! Found it. I was rather impressed with myself. The cache is still in great condition. I put the travel bug sheet/Ziploc into the cache, which may have been a mistake as it was replaced and has already continued on its mission. I hope that whomever takes the sheet and baggie looks it up online and realizes that the travel bug is fine and has moved on. We took the Insanity peg game (which we all played at some point during the rest of our U.P. trip) and left $2 (I didn't bring my caching bag with me, as I only expected to hit the earthcache). Then we took a few pictures of the great view before hiking down the Southerly side, which was covered in ripe thimbleberries and raspberries...mmmmm! The view, as always, was spectacular.

#100! Intense climb to the top. I've seen this hill forever from the top of Quincy Hill - it's great to finally be on the other side looking back. On our way back down, some guy showed up in an old military jalopy. For a minute, it looked like he was going to try to make it up as far as he could (fat chance!) Fortunately, common sense prevailed and he went on his way. TFTC!

Found the cache with no problem. However, 4 days of solid UP rain have caused the cache to get wet. Dumped out about an 1/8 inch of water from the container. The log book was in a plastic bag and was a little damp so it will need a good drying out before it becomes moldy. Also, no travel bug was present as I had hoped to pick it up and take it back to the LP with me.

Out on the 2009 ICP UP+ tour, with TBC, Fish, Frardog, and Wolverine Warriors. Check your sanity at the bridge! This one was definitely on the TO DO list for this trip, but then we got here and saw how much snow was on the ground, and where we'd end up parking. Ah well, you gotta do... A nice chilly walk but all worth it to have one of the oldest in MI done. TFTC!

Found this cache with PairomedicChick, The Burch Crew, Fishing0023, and Frardog. We spent the weekend on Mackinac Island and then decided to road trip the U.P. and even add Wisconsin and Minnesota. We added all the U.P. counties and delorme pages. We climbed the highest point in Michigan and got the cache up there. We did the western most and northern most cache and we even got a FTF on the northern shore of the U.P. It was a great trip with an incredible group of cachers that included our 4000th and 4100th finds and over 200 hundred caches found. We had a great hike to the cache and couldn't believe how much snow was still on the hill. It was very scenic once we finally reached the top. TNLN SL TFTC!

As usual we managed to take the WRONG way to the cache. We used a track that only went half way up the hill and we had to bush whack the rest of the way. But once up there the view was terrific. It was one of the clearest days I've seen in the UP. Unfortunately NEITHER of the bugs listed as being in this cache are really there. The UP Counties TB info sheet is there but nothing else. A plastic goal tag from the "oldest caches TB" was also in the cache but both dog tags are gone. The cache container and the log are both damp. Both plastic baggies had holes in them and I didn't have any new one with me. Cache could use some owner maintenance. TN SL TFTC

This was an interesting one. I've been watching this for a while, wanting to do it. As far as I can tell, it's the oldest active cache in the Upper Peninsula, so I wanted to hit it for that reason.

We had to walk a bit over a half mile from where we could drive with the car. Very muddy & snowy, but I had my daughter (12) & niece (7), and they were up for the challenge. We took a meandering route up the side of the hill--the road still had packed snow, so it was actually harder going. The route we took also served to keep us out of the wind. Coordinates were right on, so we walked right up to it. Signed the log quickly. Took toy car & a hair clip, Left 2 magnets. The innards were a little damp. If it hadn't been a cold, windy, snowy day, I might have tried to dry it out a bit better. We took the easy way down--right down the cleared area on the northeast side. Much easier than going up! Superior Tour 2007 Day #8, Cache #15 (#99 overall)

This is our new oldest cache found. I believe there are only two older left in the state. It was double nice that we got two smilies for making the climb up the hill.

We also saw "our" travel bug, the michigan county one, though we don't own it, we traveled with it for some time, saw it in Marquette, and now we saw it here. I see that it is almost done with it's counties now. Good luck little buddy.

Yeah, the climb was a workout.

Some nimnul left a couple of lemon drops inside the cache. They were in one of the three baggies, but the baggies all had holes (people keep putting pens and pencils inside the baggies), so when they melted into a sticky gooey mess they not only ruined everything in that baggie but everything outside of baggies and much of what was in the other baggies as well.

I definitely didn't bring enough stuff to perform a complete cleanup, but I managed quite a bit. I discarded two baggies and cleaned up the third with a wetnap found inside the cache. I discarded several trade items, included a fake compass (second I've found this trip. Why would anyone, even the Chinese, bother to make a fake compass? The needle is see-through, there's no magnetism involved and neither end is marked North. I would have thrown this thing away even if it hadn't been all sticky and gooey), some used lottery tickets (what good are those, anyway?), a key fob, some other stuff -- and of course the offending lemon drops. Installed one new baggie from my supply. Cleaned out the inside of the container and the other trade items as best I could before the wetnap gave out.

TOOK: a piece of cord

LEFT: a shower cap

Installed a new pen.

I had once considered exactly this type of container for caches. They're pretty much bomb-proof, and nearly as durable as an ammo can. But the cost of the rubber plug was a bit much, especially after I found out I could get huge plastic screw-top pepper jars from my local grocery store for free.

Cool cache - good design for water-tightness too. It was an AMAZING view from this one. The beautiful oranges and yellows were great across the skyline. I could almost see my apartment in the distance! haha. TN left UFO race alum. TB, and my team card.

Photo amazing view from the hill!

I knew I was in for a hike, after reading the logs, but nonetheless, we got there. I had 3 kids in tote that did very well. The view is amazing, especially with the fall colors. We grabbed the Piglet Travel Bug, a key and an apple orniment. We left a Lord of the Rings card, a matchbox card, and a compass. This one will give me sore muscles in the morning. (smile)

Made it most of the way up the back of the hill with the Jeep, but ran out of traction before the top. We hiked the rest of the way, and found the cache at 7:01 PM. Took nothing; dropped off Squeaky the Piglet TB. Great view! Lousy bugs!

Additional note: j picked up a nasty case of poison ivy at either this cache or the Million Marbles cache(we did them both on the same day). Beware!

Came from Toivola and turned off toward target before getting to So Range. Took "promising" trails until I found myself going past the target about 0.15 mile south. Put my bike in the bushes and headed north thru the bush, crossing two trails enroute. Got to the coordinates and looked all over. Finally decrypted the final sentence of the hint and spotted the target about 30 feet from where I was searching. Great spot, and very well hidden. I took the Bud Light strap and left $2.00 for the next lucky finder. After sealing up the pipe, I discovered that I failed to put one baggie back. So I also have a Book of Psalms that I will find a new home for. Really enjoyed this hunt. Thanks!

A few friends and I decided to camp at the top of the hill last night and since I was going to be out there I grabbed the coordinates before I left.

Woke up this morning early and found it. Well hidden but not that hard to find. Took nothing/left nothing, the view is even nice at night when all you can see is lights.

What a great view! The hike was tough, but we made it! Had a newbie with us who looked right at the cache spot and didn't realize what it was. She was clued in and liked it. We took a little figure and left a piggy. We liked this cache a lot. Thanks!

July 6, 2004 - took Marie on her first hunt, bushwacked most of the way up the steep face - then took the easier trail down. Great view, took flag and a trash out container. (Marie almost filled it on the way out, thanks F450) Left Bud Light lanyard. Thank you Tim and Sandy for the fun climb we will always remember this cache. turtle

Found this very scenic cache no problem. Cache made it through the winter...but there was some water in it. Whoever found it last didn't even hide it, it was sticking right out of the top of the stump. It looked like 2 people found it in February but never logged it on here. Don't you hate it when people do that? Owell...took a motorola keychain and a dive sticker which was originally mine. Left 2 cache-in trash-out cannisters.

Thanks for the cache.

Wow that's a BIG hill! Not too much difficulty in finding it. My eTrex showed that it was about 20 feet from where it actually was but it was also reading a 20 foot acuracy so go figure... On the way down IceDiesel, Dan, and Myself ran down the steep face of the hill.

Now we know where the PFRC goes sledding...

Took Nothing
Left Safe Diver Sticker from Hungaria cache

This one was a hike and a half. I bushwacked most of the way before realizing there was a trail going up the hill. When I got there I found the cache within 10 minutes. The view was sweet. Clear day and could see for miles. We saw a bear at the bottom of the hill. It never even saw us.

oops... forgot to mention we took a coin and left a Scuba sticker we took from earlier in the day.

Did this one on a hot muggy day while in the UP for a week of caching/camping. Went up the side way & followed deer tracks going all the way up. I came down the middle of the hill climb area & there was a set of deer prints coming right down the middle of the hill climbing strip. Nice spot with a nice view. TNLN

This was my first cache attempt. What a hike. Steve and I got to the top and had no luck. We stood around swatting bugs while decoding the very lengthy hint. Finally found it well covered.
Took a toy racing car and left two worthless French coins. What a hike.

Found at 0920 hrs.

I can remember watching motorcycle hill climbs on this hill a little over a quarter of a century ago. Somehow the hill seemed smaller then. Forget trying to find the easy way to the cache ... after you exclude the obviously, dumb approach, all of the rest are still steep.

Loved the location. Took nothing. Left a keychain tape measure and our thanks for a fun morning eye opener.

Thank you for leading me to such a nice location, the view North was wonderful. This was my first cache and it was fun reading about the others who have also visited. Found it, the obvious (hard) way. Earned every inch of the face of that mountain. The view is spectacular. I went to Michigan Tech (for awhile) and I can't believe that nobody that I hung around with knew about the place. I did not take anything from the cache, but I did take a small rock from the top of the hill and plan on labeling it and placing it in another cache soon.

Was that you we saw when we were driving in?
I can't believe I forgot to log this for these last three weeks. Let's see if my memory serves me well... Erin, Ben, Lisa, John, TJ and Terry went and we found it pretty fun-ly. Uncle Terry located it, actually.
We left a note in the book as to what we kept and left... I know I grabbed an Australian coin to add to other coins I'm going to put in a cache I make.
Look for it in Northern California, as I'm moving there soon! :)
Peace.

We went up Whealkate Bluff today as a family outing. Haven't been up there since ski season. My ten year old son Ben operated the
GPS, and having the objective of treasure certainly helped him keep his
interest in the journey. The coordinates got us to within 50 feet, and we found it about 10 minutes later. We left a funky pen and a Lego adventurer. Ann and I took an Australian coin and Benjamin picked out the slide rule. So now he and I are learning to multiply and divide with a slide rule,
something they stopped teaching the year before I hit high school Trig. What fun.

(Hey Craig and Jon, that cache still smells like ski wax after your visit. I'm a bit doubtful about the condition of that Powerbar you left.

Nice sunny afternoon, but quite a bit of snow to be walking though. Hiked to site, caught my breath, and trudged around looking for cache. Spent only a few minutes though. and was unsuccessful. Will come back with more time, and maybe with some snowshoes. Great views though; worth it just for that.
