Geocache Description:

This area is adjacent to "wetlands" and, as such, during spring and other wet times, portions of the trails become difficult to traverse. Be prepared to get wet and/or muddy even if you stay on trails! You might want to bring your boots or waders. Terrain rating goes up with the amount of recent rain.

The Lyons-Cutler Reservation is located along the Allowance Brook adjacent to Sudbury Water District and other Town of Sudbury lands. The contiguous open space totals more than 340 acres, and is just upstream from the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge.

Ecology:
Much of the 73 acres of Sudbury Valley Trustees’ (SVT) reservation is wetlands; however there is also a large central upland area. This land was cleared and used as farmland until 1921, when it was sold and allowed to return to a forested state. Today, SVT manages a three mile trail system here that is open to the public.

The upland area is roughly divided into red maple forest on the east and mixed oak forest on the west, with a large stand of white pine in the center of the northern portion. Old ditches, possibly used as property boundaries, border some edges of the reservation and also run through the middle of the upland region. A number of very large trees, including red maple, white oak, and white pine, grow on either side of the interior ditch. The upland forest descends gently to a red maple swamp to the south and east, and shrub swamp along the banks of Allowance and Hop Brooks on the north and west. The understory throughout the reservation is largely high bush blueberry and buckthorn, and cinnamon fern dominates large portions of the herbaceous layer.

One of the scenic highlights of the reservation is an active great blue heron nest colony located on the northern edge of the reservation along Allowance Brook.

There is NO public access on Coolidge Road or any other trailhead except those noted below. Please follow the instructions for access through either of the SVT trailheads.

TRAILHEAD 1: (West access point) is marked by a metal fence post on top of a small berm. Suggested parking is at the nearby parking lot at the baseball field north of the trailhead. You can also park on Warren Ave. since there are not any No Parking signs on the street.

TRAILHEAD 2: (East access point) is across private land. The SVT has a trail right-of-way through this property. Suggested parking is at the nearby Loring School, but only during non-school hours! Since there are no signs, parking is allowed on Cutler Farms Road. Look on the left (South) property line of 42 Cutler Farms Road, and find a 3 foot tall marker post about 60 yards towards the back of the property, this is the trail. Go to this marker and find the next marker, etc. [If you're lucky, you may find a golfball, just toss it onto one of the greens!] Follow the post markers until you get to the trailhead leading into the Lyons-Cutler Reservation. I have done some trail clearing to make this path more easily crossed. Caution: the trail across this property is usually very wet!
