Kaple sv. Kateřiny

Kaple sv. Kateřiny je nejstarší dochovanou architektonickou památkou východních Čech. Počátky tohoto původne románského kostelíku jsou dodnes zahaleny tajemstvím. S velkou pravděpodobností souvisejí s kolonizační činností premonstrátů usazených v Litomyšli. O stavbě rotundy vznikla celá řada pověstí. Podle jedné z nich se na místě budoucí svatyně zjevila sama sv. Kateřina se zástěrou naplnenou kamením. Chtela tak dát najevo své prání, aby jí zasvecená kaple vznikla práve zde. Ceskotrebovští ale prání svetice neuposlechli. Zacali se stavbou na jiném míste. Tam se jim ale nedarilo. To co za den zbudovali bylo v noci zboreno. Toto se opakovalo den za dnem, než jim nezbylo nic jiného než postavit kapli na míste, které vybrala sama sv. Katerina. Kaple byla patrne postavena pocátkem 13. století v románském slohu. V prubehu dalších století prodelala radu prestaveb, které jsou vetšinou patrné dodnes. Gotika zanechala stopu v podobe krížové žebrové klenby apsidy, renesance ve sgrafitové výzdobe fasády (dnes již neexistující), baroko v novém provedení strechy a okem a konecne klasicistnímu cítení je poplatná pristavená pravoúhlá predsín. Interiéru kaple dominuje oltár sv. Kateriny, v jehož centru mužeme spatrit pozdne gotickou sošku patronky kaple sv. Kateriny Alexandrijské. V nejbližším okolí svatyne se v minulosti rozkládal tzv. starý hrbitov. Ten sloužil svému úcelu celá staletí až do roku 1905, kdy byl ve meste zrízen nový hrbitov. Soucástí svatokaterinského areálu je i zvonice, která se dnes užívá jako brána. Stárí zvonice je rovnež nejasné. Lze jej položit do 16., nejpozdeji do 17. století. Rotunda sv. Kateriny slouží dodnes svému sakrálnímu úcelu. Areál kaple se zvonicí je zapsán v seznamu ceských kulturních památek.

St. Catherine's Romanesque Chapel

St. Catherine’s chapel is the oldest preserved architectonic monument of Eastern Bohemia. The origin of this originally Romanesque object is covered by mystery. Most probably it is connected with the colonization activity of the Premonstratensians settle in Litomyšl. Many legends apply to the construction of St. Catherine’s chapel. One of them narrates that St. Catherine having her apron full of stones appeared in the place where the chapel should be built. In this way she expressed her desire to have her chapel constructed just in this very place. However, the local residents did not respect her wish and began to build chapel somewhere else, but with no success. What was built during a day was destroyed during night. Finally there was no other choice than to obey her wish. St. Catherine’s Chapel was probably built in Romanesque style in the early 13th century. Throughout the centuries it underwent a number of reconstructions evident up to now. The Gothic has left its traces in the ribbed vault apse, the Renaissance in the sgraffiti decoration of the frontage (this has not been preserved), the Baroque influenced a new design of its roof and the windows and the Classicism can be seen in the added rectangular entrance room. The dominating feature of the chapel interior hearth is St. Catherine’s altar with a late Gothic statuette of St. Catherine Alexandrian, the patron of the Chapel. The churchyard situated around the chapel had been used for centuries until 1905 after a new town cemetery was established in another place. A bell tower now used as a churchyard entrance is a part of this area. Its origin is not clear, it can be dates back approximately to the 16th or to the 17th century at the latest. St. Catherine’s Chapel serves a religious object even now. The whole area of the St. Catherine’s Chapel and its bell tower are entered in the Cultural heritage register.
