LLKD-81 Blydenburgh
Boardwalk
In October of 2005, Suffolk
County unveiled a 1270 foot stretch of boardwalk in Blydenburgh
Park. This boardwalk through impassible marsh allowed hikers,
walkers and runners to travel a complete circle around Stump
Pond. Previous to the boardwalk, to bypass the marshland, one
would have to leave the park and walk on Croft Lane for about a
third of a mile and finally reenter the park.
The construction of the
boardwalk was funded through a federal ISTEA grant administered
through New York State. Due to the ecologically sensitive
marshland its construction required NY State DEC approval.
The DEC would only approve a narrow strip of vegetation be
cleared.
At a cost of $157,000 the
boardwalk proved to be an engineering challenge. The support
beams had to be buried eight feet below the waterline through the
use of a mini pile-driver. To prevent unnecessary disruption
of the marsh, timbers and mats were laid on the ground to provide a
foundation for the machine.
The cache hunt is an easy
one. For those of you who feel the need to project a waypoint
start at the listed coordinate, which should be the southern end of
the boardwalk. Project 1,025 feet at 358 degrees true.
If you have no desire to do so then just follow the boardwalk for
1,260 of the 1,270 feet. Either way enjoy your tax dollars at
work. I enjoy it as this is the one spot that I get to sprint
on my daily run through the park.
Container is a painted
screw-top plastic jar. As usual please rehide better than you
find.
