introduction
many cachers have heard of the scab island region in the heart of the topanga state park but many have yet to make the journey there. during this event which will incorporate a hike to the scab island region, you will have the special opportunity to meet fellow geocachers, discuss geocaching and to share your geocaching war stories. your fellow geocachers will be a vital part of the quest as they will help and encourage you along the way.

the event
the coordinates for the “journey to scab island” event cache is a fast food restaurant on sunset boulevard. this will be the starting point for the journey. the team will assemble at 10:00am on saturday, april 17th.

snapplez will be your guide to scab island region -- he will be bringing some safety equipment (ropes, etc.) to provide added comfort and safety on the journey.

the journey
time: because we will be traveling as a team (which tends to be slower), the journey will take at least 4-5 hours. but we will be having fun along the way -- so who cares how long it takes!

distance: the entire journey is only 3 miles round trip. but there are rocks to be scaled, climbed and crawled under.

heat: because there is lots of tree cover, heat isn’t normally an issue. we will also be in a canyon. the combination of the two tends to block most direct sunlight.

difficulty: the difficulty rating for this cache is entirely due to the terrain. there are ropes that need to be climbed and rocks to scramble over. most people are able to handle these obstacles with guidance and encouragement!

what to bring
  • water! make sure you’ve got enough
  • lunch: we will be breaking for lunch on the journey, yum!
  • camera: lots of great photo opportunities
  • plastic bags: to hold the trash we find
  • long pants/jeans: recommended to avoid poison oak
  • shoes: comfortable shoes with good traction to scale rocks. “sticky” rubber soles work better than hard hiking shoes. i know of some cachers who just took their shoes off -- what a concept!
  • stories & tales:don’t forget to bring some good caching stories to share!
