A water-accessible (only) cache on the Croton River on a off-shoot
of the river.
This is the second in a series of kayak/watercraft caches on the
Croton River. It is placed roughly 1/2 mile up the river from the
put-in on an off-shoot of the river that remains accessible at low
tide. This is one of my favorite parts of the river as this
particular area teems with wildlife. Two years ago I floated past
this point while an eagle on a tree nearby screamed at me. Tonight
when I placed the cache, I saw a muskrat, two Great Blue Herons, a
Osprey, and several ducks all while sitting quietly in my kayak.
The cache can be easily reached from your kayak or watercraft.
Please be gentle with the cache and its mounting "hardware" and
please put it back the same way you found it (to keep it mostly out
of sight). The cache has a small pencil, but, as always, it is best
if you BYOP. You can find information on the timing of the tides at
(visit link) The variation this far up the Hudson is only a few
feet. At low tide, some mud flats may be exposed, but the middle of
the river can still be easily navigated. I suggest you put in at
the mouth of the river near the Croton Train Station (see
waypoint). This is one of my favorite put-ins on the Hudson as you
can choose between many different options for paddling depending on
your mood. The bay at the mouth of the river is well-protected by
the railroad causeway and provides opportunities for bird watching.
I enjoy paddling up the river, though it is not a particularly long
trip. If you are up for more adventure you can paddle from the
put-in under the railway and out onto the Hudson River and around
Croton Point.
