This Craftsman Bungalow built in 1917 is a wonderful example of the core of the craftsman style, originating in California, and made popular by The Craftsman magazine, started in 1901 by Gustave Stickley. It gained popularity in response to the emerging middle class demand for affordable, efficiently constructed and affordable suburban homes. George Merker built the home for his family, and it has remained in the family until it's sale to us last year. Ethel Merker was the last surviving member of the family to reside here. Ethel played the French horn for the Chicago Symphony, Chicago Pops, Chicago Lyric Opera, Milwaukee Symphony, Berlin Orchestra , New Yirk City Ballet, and Biston Pops. She recorded with legends like the Jackson Five, Barbara Streisand, and Peggy Lee. She taught in several universities and designed her own French Horn-the Holton Merker Matic.
We absolutely love this areas rich history, diversity in homes, and hope you will also enjoy a quick tour of the neighborhood after signing the log. Thanks for stopping by.
