Geocache Description:

This 5L cache is located at the end of the Raceman's Track above the Silverstream Weir in the Silverstream/Whare Flat area.

The best access to this cache is to park at the car park at the end of Silverstream Valley and Flagstaff-Whare Flat Road.

Walking times to this cache can vary between two hours if your fit and 3 hours if your out on a leisurely stroll. Alternatively you are allowed to mountain bike this track - however there are some places you will need to carry your bike across streams. Once you are up on the old water race walking is very easy as it is basically flat.

The cache is a 5L jam bucket, camo painted and covered in sticks. When placed the cache contained along with a logbook, pencils and pencil sharper; a Windows Vista Trial DVD, Ubuntu Linux 6.06 install disc, a old ISA modem, a travel clock, various other trades and the Buttons TB.

This would be an ideal cache for a family walk, take some food and drink and make it into a picnic, swimming maybe an option on hot summer days.

This is the first cache in the Otago Walkways series.
One of the amazing things about Geocaching is the ability for it to take you to places you never knew existed - this cache is a tribute to that. I found this area because there is a cache at the start of the track and just before climbing up to the race.

**** CAUTION ****
This caution comes about after UNCLE's log - see logs below.

This track while well formed does have dense bush on either side of the stream and big drop offs if places. The cache itself is hidden in this bush with limited GPS reception.

The Flagstaff - Swampy area above the racemans track is known for its extreme weather conditions. Heavy fog can roll in on a sunny day with no clouds in the sky in as little as 15 minutes.

Appropriate precautions need to be taken when entering this reserve.
* Take adequate warm clothing (even on hot days), food and water (sunny days can dehydrate you incredibly fast and the tops have no palatable water sources at all).
* Always tell someone where you are going and estimated time of arrival home.
