Geocache Description:

This is the fourth and final step to finding the beautiful “Bear Coin”.

The cache is NOT located at the above coordinates. You will have to find the caches, "Hunting for Bear: Buffalo and Rabbit", "Hunting for Bear: The Hardest Part", and "Hunting for Bear: Bear's Friends" to get the actual coordinates to this cache. You have traveled long and far by this time, and you have met some wonderful animals, both real and imagined. Now, we will introduce you to the final two, Hawk and Bear.

There is a Red-Tailed Hawk that lives very near the hiding place of this cache. Do NOT disturb her home. When we initially found this location, there was an egg in her nest, but it has since hatched. Again, do not disturb her home, as she will return to it again next year.

Red-tailed hawks can live to be fourteen years of age. They usually nest in tall trees, cacti, yucca, or on the face of cliffs, as evidenced by the nearby nest. Red-tailed hawks often return year after year to the same nest. Hawks used to be found all over the U.S, but now are found mainly in the western states, Mexico, and Canada. Red-tailed hawks are very adaptable and can survive almost anywhere man leaves them alone. They are magnificent fliers, especially during their mating dances.

Red-tailed hawks were very special to the Indians. Indians referred to them as “red eagles” and felt they had a special connection with the sky and the sun. Southwestern Indians used their feathers in ceremonies to pray for rain. (Maybe you can find a feather nearby and pray for rain when we need it!)

We wanted to introduce you to Hawk, because Hawk flies high over the home of “Bear”. She is “Bear’s” guardian. She has a beautiful sky-high view of his home. She has protected him and kept him safe for the FTF! Now, she is ready for you to take him home.

“Bear” is an awesome hand-made Geocoin, made by tsunrisebey. It is only one of twelve that have been released in caches in the U.S, unless she has dropped some more herself while she was caching. This is the only coin of its kind released in Texas! The set of coins is called “Petroglyph Series Geocoins” The other coins in the set are the “Mountain Turtle”, “Thunderbird”, “Mountain Goat”, and “Big Dog” (horse). They cannot be tracked on Geocaching.com, but can be tracked on Sigitem.com.

We have enjoyed sitting up here many evenings and watching this hawk fly around in the sunset. This has got to be one of the most peaceful places to be in the evening when the sun is setting. No noises, no people, just us, Hawk, and our hidden cache! There is a bench nearby that you can sit on and relax, just go around to the left and you will find it.

To reach this cache, you will need a vehicle that can handle steep roads, or you can choose to do some climbing and walking to reach this cache. Either way, once you reach the area near the cache, you need to be very careful, as one slip, will take you a long, painful way down. Please take someone with you to do this final step of this series, for safety’s sake, and to share the awesome view! Do this cache at sunset for the best view of all!
