Geocache Description:

An easy Puzzle Micro Cache in a quiet and restful area of this large Leicestershire Village. Should only take about 25 minutes.

The coordinates given are NOT FOR THE ACTUAL CACHE, but for a junction in the centre of the village. The East/West road through the village is the former A52 trunk road, before the bypass was opened in 1989.

Park nearby, along the street, unfortunately the largest car park in the village has now been lost, since the Red Lion Pub, dating back to the 1700s was sold to developers. Starting at the given coordinates, take a short stroll northwards to the second waypoint.

You will pass various landmarks along the way, some numbers will require more effort than others. In the 1950s Comedy legends Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, who many people think of as Americans, appeared in Pantomime in Nottingham. But Stan was English and his sister was Landlady of The Bull at the time; the Duo stayed with her here in Bottesford (at least some of the time), and the Pub has several items of memorabilia behind the bar.

There used to be a sign giving details of their stay by the front door, which was this part of the Cache, but it has now been relocated. So instead, if you look on the wall in the car park, there is a cast iron official notice from the Brewery. What are the numbers in the date on that sign? Answer = ABCD

Further along towards the waypoint are former Almshouses, originally built to house 6 elderly women of the village who had no family support in their final years. It is now a Grade II Listed building. What is the year on the plaque commemorating Dr Fleming’s Hospital? Answer = AEDF

By the church, the road runs over pipes that were laid in the original Ford when RAF Bottesford airfield was being constructed. This still regularly floods and the original Ford Depth marker was washed away in the floods of Jan 2020. Though since replaced by the Parish Council.

An alternative marker gauge has been added to the church boundary wall by the footbridge. There are 6 digits shown in red; which red digit appears more than once? Answer = G

The Cache is hidden at N52 56.EDG W00 47.BAB

It is a large micro (or a small small), which is a 4th replacement for ones that went missing in 2010, 2018 and 2022 (twice). It is no longer the same type of hide, but is in a location so close to the original the co-ords have not changed. It is concealed in a different manner so whoever muggled the last one should hopefully not spot this one.

DO NOT try searching the wall or any cavities you might see in the wall.

While you are in the area, take a look up at the weather vane 210 ft up on top of the spire. On 3 September 1610, a young man named Robert Fease is recorded as having climbed up the crockets on the outside to bring the weather vane down for repair. He then took it back up afterwards. For this he was paid 3 Shillings and 6 pence (about 17p), equivalent to £23 today, but 3 days wages for a skilled tradesman in 1610!!

Final location is Wheelchair friendly, but as you might imagine, being an old village some difficulty will be experienced with path widths.
