This cache is located near the Wise’s Mill Spring House which is close to the source of Wise’s Mill Run which flows into the Wissahickon stream. This historic building was recently restored by the Friends of the Wissahickon. In collaboration with Philadelphia Water Dept., Fairmount Park Commission, and 17 different volunteer groups this area was transformed by removing numerous invasive species of plants and replanting with native vegetation. A wetland was also created to increase bird habitat and to capture storm water runoff that will now infiltrate into the ground decreasing sediment that previously ran directly into and caused erosion of Wise’s Mill Run. This is one of many local projects involved in cleaning up the tributaries that eventually flow into the major waterways in this region.
The cache is a camoed plastic container with room for a few very small trade items. If you would like to sign the log bring along your favorite geowriting tool. There is plenty of natural detritus around to rehide. This trail is very popular with mountain bikers so be on the lookout. The nearest parking is on Wise’s Mill Rd. on the west side of Henry Ave. As always be careful when crossing a street as busy as Henry Ave.
