Grizzly Mountain Lookout is located at 5,950' elevation with excellent views of the area. Where the road dead-ends you will have about 1.3 mile hike with about 600' elevation gain. I found the hike to be the best one yet on my Lookout Series. Parking coordinates are: N 47 43.348 W 116 06.595
This is the fourth cache in the 'Lookout Series'.
The cache is an ammo can (Thanks Wiz!) with the usual goodies and is located near the remains of the lookout foundation. Built in 1914, this 12x12' stone and frame cabin was the first lookout established on the Coeur d'Alene National Forest. It was later replaced with a cupola cabin in 1929. The lookout is no longer there (you can see the base) but there are still four crow's nest tree platforms along the ridgetop...please post the coordinates if you find any of them!
I found what looked to be the motherload of huckleberry bushes along the path to the top, and there was still a large snow patch in Mid July! For pictures of the original lookout http://www.firelookout.com/id/grizzlymtn.html
