This cache is the another in a series of educational GeoCaches that
have been placed in the Rochester area for Earth Science students
at Dake Junior High and Irondequoit High School. Each cache
contains information about local geology and/or natural history and
a learning activity. ALTHOUGH THESE CACHES ARE PLACED FOR STUDENT
USE, ALL GEOCACHERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO JOIN IN ON THE FUN! There are
no items placed in the cache for trade, small trackable items are
welcome.
This cache will acquaint visitors to a hidden gem - The Earl W.
Helmer Nature Park in Irondequoit. The nature center sits on delta
sands that were deposited by the Genesee River into Lake Iroquois
(a larger version of Lake Ontario, with its beach at ridge road) at
the end of the Pleistocene glaciation. Several small streams in the
area have carved their valleys into these easily eroded sand layers
to create a dramatically rugged topography. Although vegetation has
slowed their erosive powers, thse streams still can be observed
carrying sediment towards Lake Ontario to the north.
Inside the cache you will find a learning activity that will
take you into the woods of the nature center's wildlife refuge to
study one of these small streams. As you complete the learning
activity, you will make connections between the landscape features
you see and some of the essential concepts you have studied in
Earth Science this year. Enjoy the peace and quiet of the center,
and please "Cache In, Trash Out". This walking tour is best enjoyed
during the fall and spring, when the leaves do not block your view
of the landscape features.
Tread Lightly!
Please note - This is a daytime only location with no pets
allowed (sorry fido, you have to stay in the car).
The cache is a 30 cal ammo box hidden near a trail head.
