The Lummi Island Cemetery, sometimes referred to as the Beach
Cemetery, was founded in the early 1900’s, when land was cleared
for a cemetery to be supervised by the Congregational Church. Those
assisting in the clearing work were assigned lots in the
newly-established cemetery. Subsequently, title was transferred to
the township, then in the 1940's to the Grange, and then later
returned to the church. In 1964, the cemetery became a part of
Whatcom County Cemetery District Number 2.
Early records were inadequate, and by 1952 it was thought that
all but one grave had been identified. During the early years of
the cemetery, many of the burials previously on family plots at
homesteads around the island were were re-enterred at the Lummi
Cemetery.
