Welcome to Denmark, TN.
The history of Denmark is quite a story. For many years it seemed that it would equal Jackson in size. But history dealt it a cruel fate. Denmark sits on an old Indian trail taht ran from Kentucky to Memphis. Once the site of a large Indian village, four mounds still mark the site. The first settlement was on a bluff over Big Black Creek at a site known as Reid's Old Mill near Mercer. Two brothers named Harbert had a store there, in the 1830's they moved it to where the town is currently located. By 1840 there were eight stores along with a grocery store, a toggery or whiskey store, a male and female academy, and the Meriwether and Jett Hotel. The stagecoach stopped here on the way to Memphis.
The 1850's were the crowning point in its history. By this time it was one of the most ambitous and promising towns in West Tennessee. Interest centered around religion and education. The Presbyterians built the largest church around but it wasn't long before the Methodist follow with their own. A new female academy was built then a Masonic Lodge with 154 members, a company of National Guards and a brass band.
By 1872 the town started growing smaller but dreams of the railroad coming to Denmark led to hopes for a new prosperity, yet spelled its doom. The railroads bypassed it for Jackson and Mercer. Then the town was hit hard by fires destroying over thirty buildings and most of the business district by 1924.
