Geocache Description:

*** WE DO NOT ENCOURAGE ANYONE TO ACTUALLY ATTEMPT THIS CACHE ***

Lumber baron J. Frank Keith built a huge sawmill along the southern shore of Pine Island Bayou in 1903. The company town that grew up around the worksite became known as Voth. The Kirby Lumber Company acquired the property in 1922 and expanded the operation, adding hardwood machinery from the Gulf Lumber Company in Fullerton, Louisiana. At its peak, the mill consisted of two large sawmills, a band re-saw, a planer, several dry kilns, and a tram railroad, plus ancillary buildings including a company commissary and a post office. Production frequently exceeded 80,000 board-feet per day.

The City of Beaumont soon annexed Voth, expanding the city limits to their present day northern boundary at Pine Island Bayou. Production continued at what became known as Mills V and W until 1952. Even now, more than five decades later, the remains of the sawmill lie scattered about amongst the trees.

Some insist that more than the buildings remain. Many have reported strange lights and mysterious noises emanating from the ruins. Ghosts, goblins, or wild imagination? We'll let you make the call. You have been warned.

This is a night-only cache; if you attempt to find it during daylight hours you will be sadly disappointed. You'll need a good source of illumination. A flashlight or LED headlight would be ideal. For optimum results, hold your light at eye level as you peer out into the darkness.

Begin at the listed coordinates and look for the reflective trail. Follow it through the woods, along the banks of Pine Island Bayou, and into the mysterious ruins. The reflectors may vary in style, color and placement. Be sure to watch your step; you'll find some tricky spots along the bayou and amongst the ruins.

After many adventures you'll find an ammo can holding the logbook and a few trade items. Although the container is camouflaged, it is also highly reflective to make it easy to spot at night. You may also see some helpful markings nearby.

We have included a cache camera as well; please snap a photo of your team and note the frame number in your log entry. You might also try to capture a shot of any strange sights you encounter nearby. We will develop the film and post the pictures here at a later date.

Enjoy the moonlight, and be sure to reflect on the many souls who once roamed this area many moons ago. And try your best to avoid the restless ghosts who may still wander through the forest in the dead of night.
