Geocache Description:

NOTE: THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS CACHE WERE REVISED 1 SEP 2020

Original cache description from blazingpathways:

“First of all, there are important thanks to go out. This cache would not have come into being without the guidance and assistance of Ladybug Kids and Erik88l-r. Ladybug Kids' suggestion to allow earthcaches in pages that contain national park land was an important key. Erik88l-r's emails regarding possible loopholes and areas that he knew would be show stoppers was invaluable; as was his support of this way of creating a DeLorme  in a state with few roads and lots of area. My gratitude to you both!

Now, down to the basics: What is the DeLorme Challenge? I came across the Washington DeLorme Challenge and said WOW! Where is Alaska's? Soon I realized there was none to be found. Wondering about that, I perused the pages of my Atlas and reality set in. It would be amazingly difficult to complete the 132 map pages and insets, with many of them only accessible by small plane or ferry. Even this information couldn’t dampen my desire to find a way to have an Alaskan DeLorme Challenge. What you find here is the result of that desire.”

2020 Update: Under New Management

When blazingpathways hid this cache in 2008, she restricted the qualifying caches to only those that lay within the boundaries of the South Central Alaska Fish & Game Region.  This meant that some pages only had a tiny sliver of qualifying land to find and hide caches on, often far, far into the roadless wilderness.  Unfortunately, this meant that in the 12 years this Challenge has been in place no one had been able to complete more than 13 squares of the required 38 squares (Inset #2 on Page 65 was considered a separate page).  The simple problem is that there is just too much Alaska for even the most ardent outdoors enthusiast to complete without expending extreme amounts of time, effort, and money.  And while DeLorme Challenges are supposed to be Challenging, they aren’t supposed to be THAT challenging!

Therefore, effective 1 Sep, 2020, the following changes are enacted:

  1. The caches you find do not have to be inside the boundaries of the South Central Alaska Fish & Game Boundary.  As long as a map square hosts any part of the SC AK F&G unit, then a cache anywhere in that map square satisfies the requirement for that square.
  2. The number of required map squares has changed.  A cacher now needs to find only 20 caches to complete the Challenge.  Thirty-seven (37) map squares host the South Central Alaska Fish & Game unit in the 7th Edition Alaska DeLorme Atlas (2010).  Fifteen (15) of these squares are on the “road system.”  These 15 squares are all required.  In addition, since Alaska is all about adventure, you must also find a cache in 5 additional map squares.  You may choose any mix of the remaining 22 map squares to satisfy this requirement.  This requirement will provide every finder of this cache with an authentic Alaskan experience, whether they choose to hike, fly, boat, snowmobile, mush a dogsled, or ride an ATV to find their caches.

Here’s how to complete this cache: Using DeLorme’s Alaska Atlas & Gazetteer (2010 or earlier version), find a cache within the boundaries of the 15 required pages plus any 5 of the 22 additional pages listed below AND find the cache located at the final coordinates for this challenge. The following parameters apply.

Parameters

  1. Create a public shared bookmark list titled “South Central Alaska DeLorme Challenge.” When complete, this bookmark list will have at least 21 caches bookmarked, one for each of the 15 required pages and five from the additional 22 pages listed below; and one for the South Central Alaska DeLorme Challenge. Comment on each listing which page is being completed.
  2. Additionally, since there are no caches available for some of the pages or insets, placing any qualifying cache anywhere within the boundary of any page or inset will count towards completing that page's requirement.  If you live outside the local area, you are responsible for enlisting a local to maintain the cache, but if Geocaching.com will publish it, it counts.
  3. Log a note on this cache page and send a message to the Cache Owner once all 20 of your qualifying caches have been found. The cache owner will review your bookmark list and if it is verified as complete, then the coordinates for the final will be sent. Found logs that do not meet all the requirements of this challenge cache will be deleted.
  4. This cache can only be logged when the physical container for the final is found and the logbook inside signed.
  5. Generally accepted rules, guidelines and conditions for logging a cache find apply to all caches claimed towards completing this challenge.
  6. In order to count for this challenge, caches must be listed on Geocaching.com and they must show that you have personally found and logged them.
  7. Caches you found prior to the creation of the South Central Alaska DeLorme Challenge count as long as they meet all other challenge requirements.
  8. If you placed a cache to meet the requirements of a map square, it will count the same as finding a cache as long as you show as the owner on geocaching.com and the cache is active at the time you apply for the final cache coordinates.
  9. ANY type of cache counts for this Challenge except for Locationless and Lab Caches.
  10. Event caches (to include CITOs) count only if at least 3 different cachers attend (the event must have been Attended by at least 3 unique geocacher names belonging to 3 separate, real human beings.  No sock puppets or pet accounts!).  Event caches held in order to qualify for a particular page must contain the page number in your log for the event. It goes without saying that the event must actually be held in the map page it is qualifying for.
  11. The insets on Page 65 are not considered separate pages.  A cache found (or hidden) on either the main map or any of the insets completes that page.
  12. The posted coordinates for a cache will determine in which page a given cache is located. For multi-caches or puzzles, the coordinates posted on the cache page will be used to determine the page a cache gives credit for.
  13. While you may have others with you when you find the final cache, only those who have fulfilled ALL criteria for this cache will be allowed to log it as a find.
  14. The final decision as to whether the conditions of the Challenge have been met rests with the Cache Owner.
