This is muggle central, especially during rush hour and at lunchtimes with people sitting in the nearby church grounds, so extreme stealth is required here (hence difficulty rating based on stealth). Best on a weekend or very early morning or evening (when difficulty rating could be a 1). The Church (who are aware of the cache) is well worth a visit inside and interesting sculpture in the grounds.
Police Pillars are no longer in service.
The first Police Box (like the Doctor’s Tardis) was introduced in the 1920’s and enabled policemen on the beat to keep in touch with the station and for members of the public to make calls to the emergency services.
The Pillar was introduced later (Kent for example began using these in 1943).
I have found out (courtesy of Star_Cross On Flickr) that this is an example of a 1963 design.
You can tell this by the redesigned Cap section, which was done to make it easier to cast. On the steps under the Lantern the top step is a solid piece. If it were the older model it would have brackets on the top step. This modular bolt together design was created in 1955. They redesigned the body panels from a solid structure to panels, mostly to take the weight down and make it easier to assemble on site. It was the difference of 780lbs to 580lbs, and they could bolt directly to a concrete pad. Where as the original design had an underground base.
As a City of London Police Post, the Bright Blue is the historically accurate color. From what I understand even Police Posts outside the City of London were painted in this Bright Blue called Bermuda Blue. All except for Edinburgh where historical documents indicate they were painted silver.
Dark Blue was the color of the Metropolitan Police Posts, with the M Crown P cast into the panel. They also have a Fresnel glass in place of the red glass they have for the signal lantern.
As with all caches in London GPS signals are poor so find the object find the cache!
Trivia - Did you know that the copyright in the use of the image of a Police Box is now owned by the BBC to market them as a Tardis?
NOTE: Could you please ensure this is placed back where found. I have had to move this from the object itself as it has recently had a facelift and they have changed the colour (see comments above). The hint has been updated, but the co-ords are the same. Thank You.
The Log book here does get full very quickly. We are happy for this to be replaced at any time and the old log book disposed of. Changing the log would be much appreciated - Thank you.
