Geocache Description:

Enjoy exploring one of Auckland’s picturesque regional parks with stunning views in all directions; and take the opportunity to find several other caches in reasonably close proximity.

The starting point for this cache is S36° 36.765 and E 174° 49.403 in Shakespear Park. There are parking, toilet / shower facilities and a BBQ area close by. There is also a wonderful beach, the park itself and even peacocks by the office.

This is an observation cache. There are waypoints to locate within an area bounded by the blue and red walks as shown on the Shakespear Park Map. All waypoints can be seen from the formed trails and are within approximately 20m of the trails. The cache lies within this area.

The combined red and blue (Heritage / Tiri Tiri) walks at Shakespear will take a minimum of 1 hour or 5kms walking and will involve several significant changes in elevation. The terrain is grassland or unsealed track.

There are four possible objectives for attempting this cache:

  1. a wonderful walk in fabulous surroundings with great views.
  2. find and locate 5 waypoints with picture clues.
  3. use simple logic and maths to calculate the location of the cache.
  4. find the cache.

Reaching the cache will be a drive for most people, will involve a reasonably long walk and to fully enjoy the surroundings you should allow several hours. Because there will be geocachers with different levels of experience, with and without families, there are different ways to tackle this challenge.

A) Walk to the final location and enjoy the views having worked out the cache co-ordinates at home.

If you want to maximize your chance of finding the cache in one go and without having to walk too far, you can use Hint 2 to find the co-ordinates of the cache before you set off. You will need to spend a few minutes on the internet to solve the clue. I still recommend walking the red and blue routes anyway.

Alternatively you can use hint 1 and try your hand at mathematical logic to work out the cache co-ordinates. A bit more of a challenge but it still allows you to know your final destination before you set off.

B) Attempt to find the cache based on finding the intermediate waypoints and marvel at the views but be prepared to use hints to confirm the cache location.

If you want to try to find the cache using the picture clues to find the intermediate waypoints; whether you find some or all of them you can verify your answer using hint 1.

C) Once you have the co-ordinates for the cache location, hint 3 is available if you can’t find the cache.

The co-ordinates of the final location are S 36° 36.CBC and E 174° 49.DEA

You are provided with 5 photographs. These are all places close to the combined red and blue routes. Find these waypoints and solve the puzzle below

The cache is a 2 litre clear plastic container with white lid and at time of planting contained:

  • TB Timeless Spirit
  • TB Pretty gross buffalo tooth
  • Lenticle
  • Fridge magnet
  • Mini karabiner
  • Pen
  • Foreign coins
  • Key Safe

Please, please leave the cache as you found it with the lid tightly shut.

Also please be aware that the park rangers have asked that people are careful at the final location of the cache. There is a water valve box in the area that may be checked when searching for the cache. Disturbance to these valves can disrupt the water supply to the farm animals. Please bear this in mind, particularly if you have children with you. Many thanks and have fun!

P.S. This was always meant to be Puzzles in Paradise no 1. – I just got side tracked!
