Geocache Description:

This virtual cache is waiting at the end of a steep but pleasant hike.

There is only one way to approach this cache, you must park at St. Mary's Hospital. Be prepared for 1.5 mile hike up a steep paved path.

The University of Arizona has inherited a historically rich site in and around it's Tumamoc Hill Observatory. The history dates back over 900 years to when it was a Hohokam "fortified hillside." In fact it is the largest such site associated with the Hohokam tribe. The Hohokam left many petroglyphs (drawings left on rocks) which are scattered about the top of Tumamoc Hill. Note that long-term ecological studies are being conducted in the area, so stay on the established path.

While walking in this area, please observe the following guidelines:

  • The paved road is narrow, and vehicles have the right of way. Walkers should yield to vehicles by stepping of the pavement onto the shoulder until the vehicle passes.
  • Only authorized vehicles are allowed on the road.
  • The pipelines and power lines that cross the property are part of long-term research efforts and are closed to foot and motor traffic.
  • Walkers should of course not harm or remove any animals, plants, rocks or artifacts.
  • There have been new signs added along the paved road since this cache was created. To confirm your visit, e-mail me a summary of what is written on the sign that is located at the above waypoint. Note that you do not have to leave the paved road to find this cache.
