A suburban micro cache - the road can be busy so please take
care.
Christians have met and worshiped on the site of All Saints for
over 1000 years.
Roman soldiers camped here overnight whilst marching between
London and Colchester. Remains from the occupation can be seen in
the tiles which have been incorporated into the church walls.
In 1066 William the Conqueror sent his son, Ralph, to East Anglia
to compile the Doomsday Book. While here, Ralph records that he
found a Saxon church built from wood with a thatched roof. Due to
its state of disrepair he ordered it to be demolished and a new
stone church to be built in its place.
The nave dates from around 1100 and the chancel was rebuilt around
1330, when the north vestry was added. The walls are mostly
flint-rubble with limestone dressings although the west part of the
tower fell and was rebuilt with the bell chamber in 1586 and so the
upper part of the tower is largely 16th century brick.
There are three sundials scratched on the chancel south doorway
that showed the times of services.
For more information and a virtual tour of the church visit its
excellent web site at
(visit link)
Adjacent to the church is Springfield Place, a fine building
that until quite recently served as a college for Marconi trainees,
but has now been converted into apartments. Also close by is the
Tulip - the only pub in England to bear that name.
There is no car park at the church although there are two
parking areas on the road outside. However, please note that
parking is prohibited even on these spaces between 12:30pm and
1:30pm, Monday to Saturday.
The cache is a magnetic micro with a small badge for the FTF but
no pencil, so BYO!
If anybody would like to expand on this series please do so but
kindly let sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the
church names and numbers to avoid duplication.
