Geocache Description:

I won this cache container at the SJG picnic at Fort Mott. I couldn't decide if I should place it in NJ or take it back home over the Delaware Memorial Bridge with me. So I did a compromise and entered this strange section of Delaware directly from NJ near Finns Point and placed the cache about a mile from the picnic.

Unfortunately I chose a spot at the concrete base of the high tension electirc lines and it was rejected since it could look suspisious or be considered a threat at a high profile potential terrorist target.

So the cache was moved to a different location when I came to do Matthew386x's new caches out here--he had the same idea at the picnic.

A History Lession This area was created out of below water mud flats from Delaware River dredging deposits from long ago. At that time the only high ground around was Fort Mott and Finns Point Cemetery. This new land however was part of Delaware, not NJ

Most state borders use the middle or main shipping channel of a river for the border. That happend for the NJ/Pa part of the Delaware River and also NJ/De well below this section of the river. However by a quirk of colonial area deeds not in this section.

. In early colonial times. the Duke of York defeated the Dutch in New Amsterdan (which he renamed New York) and also occupied New Anstel which he renamed New Castle. He kept a 12 mile arc of the former Dutch/Sweedish territory for himself centered around New Castle that excluded land east of the Delaware River. Later Willian Penn acquired the land from the Duke and it became the lower three counties that were administered as part of his main grant of Pennsylvania. The lower three counties would later became Delaware including ownership of the entire river within the 12 mile arc. Fill in the river and the new land is part of Delaware.

Drive into the old spoils area along the flat dirt road that should be fine for a regular car unless there has been signficant rain. Plenty of room to park off the main road or turn around. Sometimes the road in may be blocked so you will have ato do a short hike.
