B&M Rail Trail Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

New England n00b: Bummer. The cache has been taken, by hand or by storm. It may well have floated away when the waters were so high. I wish I could have had the time to come sooner, I hope nobody made a fruitless journey. sigh

If anyone has the cache for some reason, I would like it back, especially the logbook, no questions asked.

Thanks for the visits, hope you all had a good time on your hunts.

Geocache Description:

Best parking: N42 53.003 W071 35.403 – on Walnut Hill Road in Amherst

Welcome to the Boston & Maine Rail Trail cache! This is an easy, serene walk along yet another forgotten piece of railway history. An excellent overview of the trail can be found on the Amherst Conservation Commission website: ACC B&M Rail Trail.

There are two ways to approach this cache – the parking coordinates listed above, which will make for a walk of about 1.5ish miles (one way). A somewhat shorter way can be found at the other end, near the intersection of Rt. 101 & Baboosic Lake Road. Though this way is shorter, there is no good place to park, and the trail head can be hard to see through the pine trees. If you choose to go this way, you'll need to access it from the Rt. 101 on-ramp heading north. Please be careful of the traffic here! Also, there is a right-of-way footbridge here to get to the trail. Please be respectful of the nearby property owner.

Coming from the recommended parking coordinates, you will pass the usual rail trail scenes – cut rock faces, trees reclaiming the land and dive bombing chickadees. Well, OK... maybe no dive bombing chickadees, but I heard them out there. :p After finding the cache, please do yourself a wonderful favor and continue on to the marshes. There you will come across a beaver dam, strange and amazing plant life, and maybe a dive bombing sparrow or two. (No, I haven't been watching any Hitchcock movies lately, hehehe). There are apparent 'cross-trails' along the way – ignore these and stay on the main rail bed, as they are not related and may be private property.

Be aware that there may still be a few downed trees along the way from the winds and rain we've had, making a normally easy walk a bit harder than usual. At the time of this writing, a huge tree was down across the trail, but I was able to climb over it. Kids can easily limbo underneath it. The tree is now much lower, and can be easily climbed over. Adventurous kids might military crawl underneath now. Limbo is definitely out!

This is my first cache placement, and I would love to hear your tales of wonder and/or woe along the way. Thanks for visiting!

Original contents: Only the FINEST brandy-new dollar store items! :p Also I have seeded a few simple Cache-In-Trash-Out film cans. Please feel free to take one, as they are not 'trading' items. FTF'r should look for an envelope in a baggie.

This cache has been placed with the kind permission of the Amherst Conservation Commission. Please stay on the trail, and if you should see some man-made debris along the way, please trash it out. Thank you!

Winter season notes: There may be areas of ice that might require walking on the edge of the trail. Wear non-slip boots or adjust accordingly. Be safe! There may also be pools of water (which might turn to ice) that might require an off-trail bushwhack of about 10 feet or so. This concludes our test of the emergency cachecast system. We now return to your regularly scheduled programs.
