Pisgah Marsh EarthCache

This cache has been archived.

Geocaching HQ: Hello from Groundspeak,

We must regretfully archive this cache at the request of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) as a result of recent changes to the IDNR's geocaching policy. Per the new policy, EarthCaches are no longer allowed in Fish and Wildlife Areas.

You can find the new policy here: http://www.in.gov/dnr/7488.htm

Please be sure to read through the new policy. Your local reviewers and Groundspeak are available to answer any questions. At the bottom of this log, you will find email addresses of the Indiana Reviewers, as well as a contact at Groundspeak, who are happy to help. In the meantime, please know that the Indiana Reviewers have done everything in their power to keep as many caches as possible on IDNR lands and to make this transition as smooth as possible. They have worked long and hard with the IDNR to come up with a new policy that we hope will work for most cache owners.

We regret any inconvenience the implementation of this new policy may cause. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Thank You,

The Groundspeak Community Relations Team

Geocache Description:

The Pisgah Marsh Boardwalk and Golden Eagle Viewing Deck was constructed to allow visitors the opportunity to experience and understand the natural habitat and diversity of the marsh while protecting the habitat.

An Indiana birdwatchers hidden treasure, Pisgah Marsh includes grassland, marsh, lake and upland habitat. Nestled on the Kosciusko, Noble and Whitley County lines in northeast Indiana, Pisgah Marsh is an ecologically sensitive, geologically significant and biologically diverse area accessible through a boardwalk. Two state-endangered species are found there, the Massasauga rattlesnake and Blanding turtle. The wetland and upland areas also provide habitat for migratory waterfowl, sandhill cranes, beavers, rails, squirrels, raccoons and deer.
While visiting here you will learn about many different features of the marsh.
One of the most interesting is that you will find you are walking along an Esker.
An esker, in geology, is a winding ridge of gravel and sand, believed by geologists to have been deposited during the spreading of glacier ice in the Pleistocene epoch. Eskers probably mark the sites of subglacial streams and rivers. The gravel is sometimes heaped 12 to 24 m (40 to 80 ft) high; and the length of an esker may run from 1.6 to 32 km (1 to 20 mi). Esker deposits are found in Finland, Ireland, Sweden, and northern North America.
When you arrive at the coords posted you will look out upon a lake . While here and in order to log a find on this earthcache you must take a picture of yourself with gps in hand and the lake behind you. At this time you will find information that tells you how deep the lake is at its deepest point, and how much the beaver dam effects the lake level.

To log this EarthCache, you must e-mail us the depth of the lake and the amount that the beaver dam can effect it. You must also email us the answer to the following question: In what general direction is the esker trending? You must also post a picture of yourself at this location with gps in hand. Logs that contain the answers to the questions in them are subject to being deleted ! There is only one way to learn about this beautiful place and that is to visit this EarthCache!
