Geocache Description:

Trail View Turnpike Transition

A decon container just off the trail in Trail View State Park

It is interesting to experience the change in scenery, mood and environment when you walk along this trail and cross from one side of Jericho Turnpike to the other.  You seem to go from a tranquil and serene environment on the north side to an unsettled and restless atmosphere on the south side. The entire length of this park is beautiful. The cache is hidden just off the trail. If you park at the suggested coordinates, you will need to walk across Jericho Turnpike (be careful please - use the crosswalk). The coordinates for parking and for the trail head are shown below. PLEASE DON'T USE THE BIKE TRAIL. IT WILL BE SAFER AND EASIER FOR YOU IF YOU USE THE HIKING TRAIL.

A bit about Trail View State Park (from the NYS Parks Website):

Trail View is a 400-acre, 7.4-mile linear park that serves as a link along the Nassau/Suffolk Greenbelt Trail that extends from Cold Spring Harbor State Park on the north shore of Suffolk County to Bethpage State Park, and eventually to the south shore of Nassau County.

New YorkState obtained the land in the 1960s intending to use it as a parkway connecting Caumsett State Historic Park to Bethpage State Park. In the summer of 2002, the property was dedicated as a state park, offering a variety of recreational opportunities including trails for hiking and bicycling on its hilly terrain and open fields.

Trail View encompasses a variety of habitats and undeveloped natural resources such as hardwood forests, marshes and succession fields with elevations ranging from 60 to 300 feet above sea level. The park is a favorite spot for birdwatchers year-round, most especially--because it lies on the Atlantic flyway--during the spring and fall bird migrations.

On a limited basis, visitors can ride horseback or cross-county ski.
