Sycamore Cycling Stash Series # 9: 0.6 miles up the Wood Canyon Vista (Backbone) Trail.
The caches in Sycamore Canyon more than a couple of miles from a trailhead are visited only every few months. They must be too far for most hikers to reach them, so I'm starting a series of caches that are on the central trails. The objectives of putting these caches are

1. To give mountain bikers some caches that are more than a few minutes from the trailhead
2. To give hikers who like long hikes some more caches
3. To provide more caches to encourage more cachers to venture into the heart of Sycamore Canynon
4. To encourage cachers to take up mountain biking to make it easier for them to get to these

Of course all cachers are encouraged to seek these out whether they arrive by bike, foot or horseback. In fact, some of these caches will be on trails that are closed to bikes so you won't be able to reach them on wheels! Also, bring some caches of your own to deploy while you're looking for these. There's plenty of room, and more deployers makes for a more interesting day of caching!

The terrain rating is high because of the distance from a trailhead. These caches are all near firm and well-travelled trails. Trailheads are listed on "Sin Nombre Crash Corner" GC1KGYR (visit link) .

Sycamore Canyon is part of the majestic Pt Mugu State Park and is immediately west of the Boney Mountain State Wilderness Area. You can find detailed maps and trail descriptions at VenturaCountyTrails.org on this page (visit link) . Print out the map and bring it with you to find the quickest way through the park.

You are looking for a small camo'd plastic food container.

Down from Between Main Trails, actually getting closer to the La Jolla trailhead but a longer walk. This was my turnaround point. I was close to here a few weeks ago, working up Sycamore Canyon, but decided not to detour up here. Glad I didn't, since I now know the cache is about 300' above where I was that day.

Took way longer than it should have to find. Finally read the description and hint and said huh, not much of THAT around HERE. Took only a minute more. Two hiking muggles came past and commented on this being a good spot for a break. In fact a good sea breeze was blowing up the canyon bringing cool air on a day with a hot sun. Could have sat down and sewed on some buttons.

I'd found most of the caches on my list (including all the BBT caches) on the way out, so my next cache was to be I can see my car from here!. I had thought about making a short loop, down to the canyon and up Hell Hill. But I was getting sufficiently tired that I didn't want the extra 300' elevation gain, plus I figured the nice breeze on the ridge probably wasn't reaching the canyon bottom. So I turned back up the hill.

I came out for a great bike ride. I didn't load any geocaches into my gps this time, but I stopped here just to try. Maybe this is how I should geocache, as I found it very quickly. Then I continued on for a great ride up the trail. On my way back, I was asked to send the rangers up to help out a hiker that wasn't feeling well. I hope he turns out well as the rangers called in the paramedics. TFTC

It looks like this one will be hiding from me for a while. I'll keep looking each time I come through the area.

Headed uphill this morning to La Jolla Canyon. It felt like I was wrong way on the freeway, with all the bikes wizzing downhill. They were friendly though. I really thought the tandem dirt bike on a single track was cool. And scary. Cheers.
