New Holly Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

brodiebunch: Some time between April 25th and today, this geocache was muggled-the log book was tossed in the ivy and there was some items and the disclosure strewn about the path to the area. The container was no where to be found.

This was a high maintainance geocache for the last two plus years having been replaced at least once before.

Our goal was to place geocaches in SE Seattle because for a long time there were few away from the lake. Now there are many more that followed so perhaps our goal was met.

But we have three other perfectly good geocaches in SE Seattle to find.

The sun has set on New Holly......

Geocache Description:

When searching for caches to find, I noticed that SE Seattle had few caches located away from the lake. So, being on vacation this week with no real plans, I decided to add one, or two, or three.

Below is a bit of Holly Park/New Holly's history:

Holly Park was built in the 1940's to house veterans and WWII defense workers. In 1953 it was converted to housing for low-income families. By the 1980’s this housing community was failing beyond repair and had become the most distressed of Seattle Housing Authority’s housing stock.

In 1995 the housing authority received a $48 million grant to revitalize Holly Park. Apparently the housing authority believed the only way to accomplish this task was to start all over again. New Holly now blends into the surrounding neighborhood, ending the stigma people have about high concentrations of public housing.

There are several greenbelts in the development and this cache is in one of them. There are no real trails leading into the greenbelt, but the underbrush is light. The cache is a black round container that fits perfectly in its hiding spot so please make sure it stays in it with good covering. Good luck and welcome to Southeast Seattle.

FYI, the Chief Sealth trail is being built near the cache following the giant power lines.
