Woodland Fortress Traditional Geocache

THIS CACHE IS A TRADITIONAL CACHE BUT ALSO CONTAINS A CLUE TO OUR A walk in the woods MULTI CACHE. IF YOU INTEND TO ATTEMPT THE MULTI CACHE YOU SHOULD VISIT ITS PAGE FIRST SO THAT YOU WILL KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THE CLUE WHEN YOU FIND IT.

Gateforth woods is currently undergoing regeneration to restore it back to traditional British wood and heath land. Many of the plantation pine trees have been chopped down and replaced with native species. The new trees have been protected by a deer proof fence which completely encloses the wood. The public footpath which runs through the wood passes through two wire gated stiles in this fence.

The best approach is from the outskirts of the village of Gateforth. Approaching from Birkin would mean crossing a large muddy field. There is a public footpath sign pointing the way although you may have to walk over ploughed fields to follow it as the path is not well used. Head straight across to a small footbridge (or around the field edge if you prefer) then carry on across the next field on the same alignment until you reach the woods. There is no public access into the woods themselves, just the right of way straight through. The cache is located at the far side enabling you to enjoy a walk right through and back again.
